About Nuremberg

Nuremberg in Germany's Bavaria is a city with a fascinating past and a lively, energetic present. There are plenty of examples of medieval architecture throughout the centre, as well as cobbled squares and brightly painted timber-framed buildings. When it comes to the food, drink and atmosphere, it's famous for its buzzing nightlife, beer and bratwurst, and the way the whole place begins to glow around Christmas time.

Nuremberg hostels are as historic as the place itself. You can stay in one that's right beside the city walls or within the old town. If you're travelling alone or in a small group, choosing a hostel in Nuremberg with an on-site bar makes it easy to get chatting to new people. A hostel with an outdoor patio and a huge selection of German beers is a perfect spot to spend a summer evening. Most hostels in Nuremberg also have free Wi-Fi.

The Altstadt (old town) is Nuremberg's central neighbourhood, with lots of the city's oldest buildings and monuments. It's also where you'll find the busiest bars and liveliest clubs. Check out the friendly and fun beer gardens while you're there. Knoblauchsland district is home to the regular Hauptmarkt open air market. For a day trip, you could head to the nearby UNESCO-listed town of Bamberg, which has medieval and Baroque buildings across its seven hills.

Among its many historic sights and museums, Nuremberg is home to the German National Museum, which has a huge collection of art and archaeological finds, as well as everyday objects like clothing, books and toys. You can wander through to get a sense of Germany's cultural history. For some tranquil light exercise, head for a calm stroll by the river. In the summer, you'll even find a sandy beach there, complete with palm trees, deckchairs, games and plenty of places to eat and drink. If you're visiting in December, don't miss Nuremberg's Christmas market. Admire twinkling lights and soak up festive cheer as you wind your way around the charming little huts selling everything from warming mulled wine to quaint woollen accessories.

Nuremberg Airport is served by flights from across Europe and it's just a 6-minute bus ride from the centre. If you're taking the train, Nuremberg Central Station is the city's main railway hub, a 10-minute walk from the middle of town. Most of the city can be explored on foot, while the bus, tram and underground all make it easy to visit further afield.
