About Maastricht

Admire glorious gothic architecture in Maastricht. This university city is known for its pockets of medieval buildings with a side of buzzing nightlife. Wander around the multiple churches – Sint Janskerk is a must for its stained glass windows – or head down the Maas River for a beer in a local Dutch café. With an abundance of art galleries, cobbled squares and streets full of independent boutique shops, there’s lots to discover.

Wake up to fresh coffee at a Maastricht hostel with its own café, or breakfast with river views at a stay along the banks. There’s an eco-friendly space too, perfect if you’re travelling green. You'll find hostels in Maastricht with free Wi-Fi to make staying in touch with home easy. For downtime with a social feel, pick a hostel with an outdoor terrace or barbecue.

When it comes to exploring the neighbourhoods in Maastricht, you can stroll past medieval buildings or take in a local vibe in a residential area. Head to Wyck for vintage shops, cool cafés and nightlife. Boschstraatkwartier is located in the heart of the old city, near historic churches and modern galleries. Jekerkwartier is also near the centre. It's full of quaint streets split by the Jeker river, and it's a peaceful spot to spend a quiet afternoon.

There’s lots to put on your bucket list for Maastricht – not least, an abundance of art. For religious artworks and relics, visit the Basilica of Saint Servatius. Step into the future at the Bonnefantenmuseum, a riverside art gallery famous for its striking modern architecture. Take a break in the Vrijthof, where the fountains provide a great photo opportunity and you can recharge at an authentic café. Hell’s Gate (or Helpoort) is top of many travellers' lists – it's the last remaining old town gate from the 13th century. Drop by the Dominicanen Bookshop too. At this church-turned-bookshop, you can find a new title among the old stone arches.

Getting into the city from Maastricht Aachen Airport is simple. Take the 59 bus to the train station. The journey takes around 20 minutes and buses run regularly. Eurostar and intercity train services arrive and depart from Maastricht Railway Station. In the city, you can hire a bike to explore like a local (there are public rental spots all over) or take a bus.
